Importance of Mental Health

Mental health includes our psychological, emotional and social well being. The World Health Organization (WHO) conceptualizes mental health as a “state of well-being in which the individual realizes his/her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his/her community”. It affects how we feel, think, act and behave as we cope with our life. ‘Health is Wealth’, but mental health can affect our daily living, physical health and relationship. When someone mentally week then he/she faces depression, anxiety, addiction, bipolar disorder and other conditions that affect their thoughts, feelings, activities and behaviors. Good mental condition helps to determine how to live happily, handle stress, make us healthy and relate to others, which make our life perfect. It also promotes better relationship with others. Good mental condition enables us to work more productively, meaningful contributions to our family, community and the society. More and most important point is that it helps to a greater sense of inner peace or calm.

To improve mental health make social connection, stay active, appeal to your senses, take up a relaxation practice, make meditation, make leisure and contemplation a priority and eat a brain healthy diet to support strong mental health. Surround yourself with good people. Young adults from the age 18 to 25 have higher prevalence of any psychiatric disorder compared with other age group followed by those ages 26 to 49 and adults ages 50 and over. Mental illness is thought to be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Childhood trauma or abuse, social isolation, social disadvantage, severe or long term stress, experiencing discrimination and stigma are some major issues of mental health problems.
